Kabir Bedi on breakup with Parveen Babi

During a recent chat with Digital Commentary, Kabir Bedi got candid about his relationship with actress Praveen Babi and their breakup. Revealing that it was during their time in London that he noticed her condition deteriorating, Bedi said, “I could see that her condition was getting worse. And I told her that you must take treatment. But she did not agree to it at all. I knew that if she does not take any treatment, her condition might get worse. And this is why we eventually separated.”

Talking about their breakup – and mentioning that it was Praveen Babi who initiated the split, Kabir Bedi said, “She left me because she was afraid that I will force her to have treatment. Paranoid minds are scared of everything. She was scared that if some doctor gets to know, he might tell someone, and her career might get over.” Kabir further emphasized, “Parveen Babi left me, I didn’t leave her.”

Kabir: Parveen already had mental health problems

Kabir dismissed rumours that their breakup was the cause of Parveen’s mental health struggles. He said, “The media here blamed me (for the relationship ending), that I rejected Parveen and that’s why her mental health suffered. The truth was that Parveen already had mental health problems.”

Kabir also got candid about the sorrow he felt upon learning of Parveen’s tragic death. He said, “I was very upset when she died under very tragic circumstances.” Babi was found dead on 22 January 2005 after her residential society secretary informed the police that she had not collected groceries from her doorstep for three days. Upon investigation, the police suspected that she may have been dead for up to 72 hours before her body was found.

Several of the actress’ former partners, including Bedi, Mahesh Bhatt, and Danny Denzongpa attended her funeral. Despite converting to Christianity during the last years of her life, the actress was buried at theJuhu Muslim cemetery in Santacruz, Mumbai.
